Continue in a new chat

When a chat gets too long and you need a fresh one, it boils everything down into a handoff note.

Good for: People who have long chats with AI and need to carry on in a new one

Read this first: Call it by name: type /handoff ($handoff in Codex)

What you can do once it's installed

Just say the “You say to AI” line, with your own details swapped in.

Leave a note before a new chat

You say to AI

/handoff In the next chat I want to finish the budget section of my travel plan.

What AI does

  1. 1.Sums up how far this chat got
  2. 2.Pulls together the key points for what comes next
  3. 3.Lists Skills worth using in the new chat

What you get

A handoff note the new chat can read and pick right up from.

Keep private info out of the note

You say to AI

/handoff Write a handoff note, and leave out my account details.

What AI does

  1. 1.Pulls together the key points of the chat
  2. 2.Strips out passwords, keys and personal info
  3. 3.Lists existing files by path instead of copying them in

What you get

A clean handoff note with nothing sensitive in it.

How to install

Which AI tool do you use?

  1. 1. Open the Terminal app on your computer, paste the line below and press Enter

    npx skills add mattpocock/skills@handoff -g

With no tool name, the command looks for the AI tools on your computer and asks where to install. If it says npx is missing or too old, install the latest Node.js (22 or newer) first.

    First time using the terminal?
    • How to open it: on a Mac, press ⌘ + Space and search “Terminal”. On Windows, search “PowerShell” in the Start menu. In Cursor, Trae or VS Code, use the menu Terminal → New Terminal.
    • Windows says “running scripts is disabled”: change npx at the start of the command to npx.cmd and try again.
    • If a list pops up: move with the arrow keys, press Space to tick the tools you want, then press Enter.
    • How to tell it worked: you'll see a success message. Reopen your AI tool and ask “What Skills do you have now?” to check.

Don't feel like opening a terminal?

Tools like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Trae can run commands themselves. Send them this:

Please run this command in my terminal and tell me how it went: npx skills add mattpocock/skills@handoff -g
  2. 2. Reopen your AI tool

New Skills only get picked up after a restart.

  3. 3. Just say what you want

Say it the way the examples do. To call it by name, say “Use handoff to help me…”.
